The background is a view of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. The bridge is between the Doge's prisons and there is the belief that the bridge's name was inspired by the sighs of the inmates as they were led across the bridge to be executed. I think this image has alot about it and alot behind it. for the story he has chosen 1 shade of could to make the image depressing.

For the other picture the image is called Medico della Peste "Plague Doctor" The mask with the long beak is made to keep in it substances and aromas that it was believed would have protected the doctor from getting contaminated from the plague.
